Brief Summary
Gail makes porcelain platters, bowls, vases and cylindrical vessels, fired to 1260’c. They are slab, hand-built forms, combining silkscreen printing with ceramics. Each piece is unique or part of a small batch. She is inspired by studio ceramics, jazz music, textiles, textures and pattern. She wants the plasticity of the porcelain to be evident in the scalloped shapes, the makers hand to be revealed. She responds to the misprint, the unexpected overlap, the unexpected placement of the image and the space around it.

Gail Altschuler studied BA (Hons) Fine Art and History of Art at Unisa, South Africa, after completing a Diploma of Art and Design, at The Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. PGCE and MA in Art and Design Education, at the Institute of Education, University of London.

She is the editor of the London Potters newsletter and she runs a private art school from her home/studio in North London for adults and children, teaching; drawing, painting, hand-built ceramics and art history, often helping with GCSE and A level portfoloi preparation..
