Brief Summary
ABOUT THE ART
Inspired by urban spaces, populations, and visual textures, my portfolio could be described as a whimsical interpretation of the urban landscape. Neither literal nor practical representations, my mixed medium paintings and installations depict the city as a layered accumulation of elements.
Informed by a fascination with graphic design and architecture, I draw on the language of street art to create disjointed compositions that are gestural and experimental. Layered photographs and ephemera lend a sense of place and recognition in an unraveling visual narrative of constant change.
Founded upon my experiences as a native of the rust belt, the urban construct depicted in my work is informed as much by fictional cities as real ones; the urban environment portrayed in films, books, and song lyrics merges with memory and documentation. Hip-hop and electronic music provide the soundtrack to my work, while street art inspires a playful merging of images and architecture.
ABOUT ME
I firmly believe that buildings and other structures have relationships with each other. I am deeply amused by pictures of people dressed up in costumes, have an obsession with goldfish, and never sleep as well as I’d like. I am in love with typography and architecture and never seem to have hot water for my morning shower. I received my BFA in painting and printmaking from Carnegie Mellon University in 2006, have a wonderful studio across the street from a steel mill in Braddock, PA and grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland, OH.
