Brief Summary
Marius Watz (NO) is a designer and artist working with abstract images created through generative systems. An autodidact, he dropped out of Computer Science studies to pursue visual work based on parametric processes. He is known for his bold use of colors and hard-edged geometric compositions, with a signature style of visual hedonism.
In 2005 Watz founded Generator.x, a curatorial platform for generative art and computational design that has resulted in a series of events such as exhibitions, audiovisual concerts and conferences. The latest installment was “Generator.x 2.0: Beyond the Screen” in Berlin, a workshop and exhibition produced in collaboration with Club Transmediale 2008 that focused on digital fabrication and generative systems.
Watz is currently pursuing his own personal work in a range of media, from realtime projections to prints and physical objects. Recent projects have focused on the translation of digital models into physical space, using techniques such as Rapid Prototyping, laser cutting and CNC milling.
Watz is a lecturer at the Oslo School of Architecture and at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Department of design. He has given many workshops and lectures on topics like as computational aesthetics, live cinema and digital fabrication.
Marius Watz is based in Oslo and New York, and is represented by [DAM]Berlin and LUMAS Editions.
