Often not having a fixed starting point Best forms narratives, layered with codes and references to a world that has long since passed. Borrowing from memories, stories of explorers, the age of discovery, antique furniture, science fiction and more Best creates both single and sequential images that have a feeling of unease and melancholy
The unseen is celebrated and our usual perspective on the world seems to have parts missing. There is often a sense that the work is unfinished, in a state of flux. It has had a life before and will continue to change after the viewer has moved on
Illustrator and designer Luke Best has managed to apply his way of working to both commercial and personal projects. His diverse output, both as a solo artist and collaborative member of the influential illustration collective Peepshow, includes video and animation, self published books, window displays, art direction, fashion, and designing homemade spacesuits.
