Joe Schmelzer on The Creative Finder

Joe Schmelzer doesn’t stick to a single subject matter or style. But his visual aesthetic--incorporating innovative new technology while maintaining the characteristics of traditional photography--has established him as an influential presence in the travel, entertainment and shelter markets. Featured regularly in the editorial pages of <i>Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Vogue UK and Travel + Leisure</i>, Joe's distinctive images convey a natural, unstaged sense of environment. Reflected in his work, too, is Joe’s ability to make his subjects look and feel at ease, from moody fashion models to overscheduled celebs. But it’s his capacity to help clients realize their own creative visions--and his time zone-defying ability to be productive at any hour—that’s propelled Joe to the ranks of today’s most sought-after commercial photographers. Originally from suburban Cleveland (yes, Shaker Heights), Joe’s intro to photography came via an obsessively popular series of Yousuf Karsh prints. After honing his talent with still-lifes of half-eaten meals--even today a favorite subject matter--Joe relocated to Manhattan to officially launch his career. Now based in Los Angeles, Joe and his devoted pooch, Parker, make their home-office in an Art Deco suite that once served as JFK and Marilyn Monroe’s “secret” hideaway. Amid this historic inspiration, Joe conceptualizes, arranges and produces photo/video projects through his studio-production company, Treasurbite Studio, Inc. When not on assignment, Joe spends lots of time working out at the gym (he’s a bit of a fitness fanatic) and working on his first book, The First Apartment Book: Cool Design for Small Spaces, being published by Clarkson Potter, to be released in August 2012.
