Brief Summary

Bula Barua is an Assamese-American visual artist, User Experience Professional, and a well-known published author of short stories and poems. Bula was raised in the USA by immigrant parents from Assam, India and primarily works with acrylics and oils on canvas, paper and aluminum. Her works are included in many private and public collections around the world.

As a young adult, Bula divided her time between performing in plays and musicals, as well as sketching, acrylic painting, writing, and listening to pop music. Her influences, which range from Prince, Tori Amos, Sarah McLaughlan, and Michael Jackson… to the Indian traditions of Lata Mangeshkar, Parveen Sultana, and Ravi Shankar… to the paintings of Van Gogh, Renoir, and Picasso… to 19th Century English literature and popular teenage fiction… to Immigrant Culture, Greek Mythology and Astronomy… eventually inspired her to create a style distinctly her own. Soon, Bula found herself experimenting with a new technique in an effort to gain mass, volume, unity and form. She began to contour her figures with a long brushstroke that followed but did not emphasize the outlines.

Today, Bula works in oils, watercolors, and acrylics, and is particularly noted as a modern surrealist for her ability to express an idea with a minimum of effort and economy of touch. Her subject matter is often the intimate world of a sensitive woman who discovered poetry in the simplest acts and gestures, and her delicate, subtle works have been shown at many official Salons throughout the USA and Europe.

In addition to creating art, Bula is also a Usability Expert, helping to make user interfaces for mobile and web applications more aesthetic, efficient and user-friendly. She spends her time in Miami and Los Angeles.

Art Takes Times Square - June 2012

Series: Le Fleur 2012 - cityartgal.com/lefleur.html

Description: My art series, LeFleur 2012 was selected for the “Art Takes Times Square” competition, beating out tens of thousands of artists worldwide.  This summer Chashama and the Times Square Alliance is working with Artists Wanted to present artists from around the world in brilliant lights on a massive scale in one of the most iconic locations in the world, Times Square New York.  Instead of the usual advertisements that are shown on the electronic billboards, this summer will showcase the work of artists, turning Times Square into a visual Art Gallery for the summer.  I am one of the artists selected for this incredible event. My art will debut in Times Square on June 18, 2012 at 7PM on billboards located  on Broadway between 42nd and 44th Streets.  The event will be hosted by Questlove and Jimmy Fallon (Late Night Show).

ArtSlant 3rd Worldwide Showcase Winner - May 2012

Piece: Siberian Honor

Description: My drawing “Siberian Honor” won the ArtSlant 3rd Worldwide Showcase, which is a curated competition that accepts online art submissions from artists globally. The piece depicts a Siberian soldier who is a woman, with beautiful pigtails and flowers in her hair, holding a rifle.  It is the perfect combination of beauty and force, and leads the viewer to question… Which is more powerful?  The aesthetics or the weapon?  The answer is clear and the piece communicates irony, humor and beauty.

ArtSlant 2nd Worldwide Showcase Winner - March 2012

Piece: Ganga

Description: In March 2012, I won my first ever art competition, the ArtSlant 2nd Worldwide Showcase, which is a curated competition that accepts online art submissions from artists globally.   My piece that won is a mixed-media piece, called “Ganga.”  The painting depicts an Indian widow rowing on the Ganges River away from the suppression of the caste system and towards the light of self-determinism.  This was a huge honor and led to me securing a one-year representation contract with one of the top art galleries in Miami Florida, located right in Miami’s Design District, ArtFusion Gallery.
