Brief Summary
I began my fine art photography work believing I was making beautiful pictures of beautiful subjects. Over time I have found that I am actually photographing feeling. Feeling that can be shared by looking at the images. In understanding that, I know that it is I who is putting the heart of the feeling into the subjects, by forming a relationship with them, admiring them, empathizing with them.
It is as tho I am looking for the secret that is in the subject, and inside myself, to finally reveal it in the image. Maybe it is about truth. To find it hours are spent examining a leaf with a magnifier, imagining being the leaf in all its seasons, becoming the leaf, belonging to it. After knowing I am a part of the subject, I can begin working with it to form an image.
My work is influenced by asian aesthetics and philosophy. Tho I feel there are many complexities inside my imagery, I struggle with the contradiction that comes in paring my work down to the simplest form, as tho a seventeen syllable haiku.
My creative life began as a freelance writer, and commercial & editorial photographer. Since 1991, I have been concentrating on limited-editioned fine-art, and my most extensive body of work is in the still life genre. I also work with the landscape, and the female nude. I print my work in black & white and color, using archival pigment ink on fine papers.
My work has been exhibited internationally…is in corporate and private collections in the United States, Europe, Latin America and Japan. I live and work from my log home in the foothills of the North Cascade Mountains in northcentral Washington State - a natural environment which stimulates my spirit and influences my artwork.
