Tim Kobe graduated with honors in Environmental Design from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He began working on world’s fairs, corporate exhibitions, and special events with Herb Rosenthal and Associates and at the American Broadcasting Companies in Los Angeles. In 1982 he worked with Murray Gelberg in New York. Later he moved to San Francisco to work on exhibition and retail design with The Burdick Group. In 1987, Kobe co-founded West Office Design Associates, and was responsible for the master planning of museums and for the design of several international exhibitions.

In 1989, as founding principal of Eight Inc., Kobe expanded the scope of the office to include architecture, both commercial and residential, retail and office design, exhibitions and product design and development. Many projects have received international design awards and have been published in Asia, Europe, and the United States.

Tim Kobe has lectured internationally about environmental and industrial design for institutions such as the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, the Industrial Designers Society of America, and for the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. He has taught environmental and industrial design at the California College of Arts and at the San Francisco Academy of Art. Kobe also sits on the boards of the Grabhorn Institute and Art Center College of Design.
