Signified: Objects + Spaces in Film
Signified is a publication that presents and discusses the powerful roles props and set design play in film. Drawing upon semiotic theory as a basis, the book discusses the significance of five objects from five different films: Pan’s Labyrinth, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Blade Runner, American Beauty and Pulp Fiction. The other component of Signified is a collection of five significant spaces within four alternative films, The Cube, The Shining, American Psycho, and two spaces from Fight Club.
The book consists of a unique Electric Blood cover material from G.F Smith, screenprinted. The book features various journal articles and writing dedicated to explaining the function of individual props, as well as 7 fold-out feature interviews from professionals working within the creative industry such as Paula Benson from Form studio, to professors of film theory such as Renira Gambarato.
