Shelter Architecture
Brief Summary
Shelter was founded with the desire to explore, research and implement sustainable design, to make an impact in the world through humanitarian efforts, and to ensure that design is accessible to all ages and abilities. To this day, we continue to pursue these founding principles through architecture, interior design and landscape design.

We design BETTER places for people to live. We do this by focusing on design solutions based on the elements that most directly impact our clients’ well being:

•We design places that improve indoor air quality, promote good nutrition habits, provide soothing stress relief, incorporate barrier free access and offer time saving living solutions.

•We promote environmental responsibility and help clients understand that our designs offer improved, not diminished, personal comforts.

•We implement efficient resource and energy strategies to provide long-term savings and optimal value to our clients.
Clients
SHELTER has applied our design expertise to a broad scope of innovative projects. From stunning luxury homes, cutting edge “green” houses and breathtaking interiors to global disaster relief, our collaborative studio crafts innovative, yet practical design solutions. 5ive, one of the nation’s first LEED-H “Platinum” homes, is an example of hyper-efficient cold climate home construction. SHELTER is leading the movement for “green” Interior Design with projects featured in the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) showcase house and ASID Kitchen tour. From bathroom renovations (RAVE 2007) to large home remodel projects (ROMA 2004) our designs repeatedly receive awards from our peers. In Minnesota, SHELTER has been a longtime partner with Habitat for Humanity of MN to promote and demonstrate sustainable design practices for affordable housing. Nationally, we were the first registered Architects to establish an office in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, where we worked to help that community get back on its feet after Hurricane Katrina. On the global stage, we work with international NGOs, Universities and financial organizations on the development of the “Clean Hub”, a rapidly deployable community infrastructure.
